Have any other questions?

Is it compulsory to have home insurance?

No. The law only requires people to have certain types of insurance such as car insurance. It’s true that if you have a mortgage, it’s necessary to take out fire insurance. In many cases, home insurance is also required if there is a rental contract.

Is fire insurance compulsory?

Yes. If you have a mortgage, you are required to have at least fire insurance for the property.

Is damage caused by extreme weather events included in home insurance?

Home Protection

If your home sustains either interior or exterior damage caused by wind (gusts of more than 75km/h), rain (more than 40l/m2 per hour), hail (including hailstones) or snow, it will be protected.

Blink Home

If your home sustains either interior or exterior damage caused by wind (gusts of 96-120 km/h), rain (more than 40l/m2 per hour), hail (including hailstones) or snow, it will be protected.

Can I add something new I have bought (e.g. a television set) to my home insurance policy?

You can always make a change to your policy’s covers.

Exclusions

Items whose unit value exceeds €20,000 are not covered. For example, an antique vase worth €25,000.  Damage caused by lack of maintenance of the home, such as leaks due to non-inspection of seals, is not covered. Damage to uncovered content, with the exception of garden furniture, is not covered. An example would be taking dining room furniture out onto the terrace and having it damaged by rain and sun.
