Spain is both the most biodiverse country in Europe and the continent’s most vulnerable place (WWF).

WWF. Association for the Defence of Nature

In its Living Planet Report 2022

Indicators on the state of Spain’s biodiversity and natural heritage show that the country is continuing to lose biodiversity. The sustainable conservation and restoration of habitats, ecosystems and species is our main ally in the fight against climate change.

Our goals are:

  • To protect and restore ecosystems
  • To value the diversity and functions of ecosystems in the fight against climate change, given that ecosystems store CO2 and support life.
  • To implement sustainable management models and promote spaces that will support biodiversity over a long period of time.
  • To publicise and disseminate the importance of carrying out conservation and improvement initiatives to protect and restore natural areas

Collaboration with Xarxa for Nature Conservation

In 2022, we made a donation to purchase land in La Pobla de Claramunt (Barcelona). This land is slated to become one of Catalonia's most important arboretums, helping to safeguard the area's agronomic, genetic, and gastronomic heritage.

In 2023, land reclamation work was carried out, and during 2024, the first 900 trees (out of a planned 1,200) were planted. These include more than 250 high-quality, endangered, and highly adaptable varieties of heirloom fruit trees. In addition, a drip irrigation system and a 140 m³ reservoir were installed to ensure irrigation during droughts. The soil structure was also improved by deep decompaction to promote water retention and root development for the trees, and a game fence was installed to protect the fruit trees from roe deer and wild boar, while still allowing passage for birds, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals.

During 2025, progress was made in consolidating the arboretum by improving existing trees and the terrain, planting new trees, and replanting some, with the goal of achieving the first fruit harvest planned for spring 2026. In addition, work continued on reinforcing the waterproofing of the reservoir, improving the security of the grounds, and repairing areas affected by rain.
